Castle of Larissa
(Argos)
In the city of Argos, in the region of the Peloponnese sits a fortified castle named Larissa. As many ancient Greece sites, the dates aren’t set in stone, but one researcher claims that the Castle of Larissa was built in the 10th century (kastra.eu, 2012-2017, pg. 79). Argos has been known to be one of the largest cities in its region, and one of the great attributes of this city is the Castle of Larissa (Tomlinson, 1974, pg. 15).
The town of Argos is overlooked and is nearly taken up by what researchers believe to be a Medieval castle, most of the remains are still visible today. (Tomlinson, 1974, pg. 17). The city of Argos itself is known to have been in existence since the 3rd millennium B.C and inhabited by the 2000 B.C. (Courbin, 1956, pg. 167). Another site situated next the Larissa Castle, named the Apis, helped make Argos safe and incomparable (Courbin, 1956, pg. 167).
Between the two fortified areas where the buildings of the city (Tomlinson, 1974, pg. 18). The importance of the Castle of Larissa was to protect and overlook the great city of Argos. Argos isn’t known to have any important historical figures, but is known for being a mighty force in its area, in which it dominated (Tomlinson, 1974, pg. 15-18).
There has been a great debate on the name of the castle and where it originated from. The names, The Castle of Larissa and The Castle of Argos, are interchangeable. As one can assume the Castle of Argos comes from a castle being fixed in the acropolis of the great city of Argos. Some researchers believe the name Larissa is of the Pelasgians origin (perseus.tufts.edu, 1918, par. 1). The importance of the name Larissa out of all others is, Larissa is the daughter of Pelasgus (perseus.tufts.edu, 1918, par. 1). Per Greek Mythology the Pelasgians where some of the first inhabitants of Greece (perseus.tufts.edu, 1918, par. 1).
